We generally don't use chalk paints, but if you clean your stencil immediately after painting with warm water and mild soap the paints will come off the stencil. Otherwise, you may need to soak the stencil if the paint is dried.

Patty probably used her degreaser to keep the paint from peeling off.

@trohlfs01 That's what I was wondering. After sanding, if she used the degreaser, then painted the stencil on.

Patty mostly sanded the areas that would be stenciled. If you have trouble with the paint adhering to the surface, you can sand a bit more or sparingly use the zep degreaser. Just be super careful with the degreaser. If you have a scrap piece of wood or cardboard, you can test the technique before painting on your surface.

Thanks for asking! Patty used Zep All Purpose Cleaner: amzn.to/37OkmWU - sprayed and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping off twice. It's hard to tell what the wood is sealed with, but if you need to degrease and sand again it will be worth it because you need the water to not bead at all. Then your paint will stick. We haven't tried sealing this type of surface with mod podge. The reason we use Clapham's Bees Wax is because it thoroughly seals the surface and is food grade.

Thank you for asking!! We always recommend using very light coats of paint that are of medium viscosity. You will likely need several layers of paint for the surface - background and stenciling areas - but this ensures that the paint dries quickly and stays in place - no running under stencils.

That is personal preference. You most certainly can. With our stencils, our artists work very hard to make the bridging flow with the curves and shapes of the design so it’s not as noticeable if you don’t fill it in.

For the paint, we buy in bulk because we use so much of it. If you find that you are using quite a bit of background colors like white, black, etc. you can use house paint. We use Sherwin Williams Color to Go for most of our colors. For smaller areas and bright and rich colors, DecoArt is a wonderful brand. It can be found in most craft shops and also on Amazon. Also, we do have a color guide! It lists the DecoArt paint number first, then the Sherwin Willams paint number, then our code. I will include the link to this below so that you can see if this is something that might be helpful. Our Paint Color Guide - We have a physical product that comes in two large sticker sheets. And we have a digital copy that can be emailed to you. We recently found Minwax Water Based stains and they are really great. They come in a ton of colors. Patty's favorite is Legacy Brown #1056

We do not use that technique, but we know a lot of stencilers do. We prefer to do the offload method with our brush and paint and using the dome brush and that has worked wonderfully for us!

Yes, we use the rough part. We do recommend pulling the brush toward you or pushing the brush away from you - in one direction - so the brush is more on it's side than straight up and down on the grater. We don't recommend a swirling motion or a back and forth motion so that you don't flatten out the domed portion of the brush. If you have any further questions, please let us know!

We know that people do use heat guns, however, we prefer to use a hair dryer on a low setting with constant movement, rather than a heat gun. You can blow dry the background before you stencil, and even with the stencil on between layers of painting. The heat from the gun can get really hot and cause the paint to melt if it's left in one place too long.

That is really personal preference. But we do recommend washing if you use glitter or red paint. We show this in the video. We do not typically remove the adhesive, but you can. We like to hang the stencils that we use the adhesive on so they aren't sticking flat to other stencils. This will help keep them "sticky" for future use.
